“Help” for you could be any of a number of different things: a new idea, a change of feeling, a new way of dealing with a problem, or connection with a supportive person or an expert.
The hope is always to resolve a problem or reduce its effect on you.
First, consider: - Is it a crisis or a problem? - How to find out
Then consider: do you need short-term or long-term help? Are you seeking merely help with symptoms, or actual permanent healing? Knowing what you are seeking is critical to success.
Second, consider: the two sources of help:
Need immediate help? - Here’s what to do
Create a feeling of safety - Use guided imagery to stop fear
Get calm - Use Step Down Tension Relief (SDTR) breathing to calm the body & quiet the mind
Ground yourself, to stop dissociation and emotional pain, and improve focus - Use this “Conscious orienting” grounding procedure to temporarily calm emotions and move to a present-centered focus
When all else fails - Regain control with a powerful shift of focus
